She listened to the roar of the thunderstorm,
She fell in love with the fragrance of petrichor,
She searched the night sky for shooting stars,
She planted flowers on her meagre windowsill
to brighten up her attic room every evening.
She hid away books with words that would
touch her slowly fraying soul,
She took pleasure in the smell of fresh-baked
bread that she had just brought out of the oven.
She made friends with all the mice who lived inside
and all of the birds who nested outside
in little pots and shoeboxes
she had given them to reside.
She placed her trust in these little things
to keep her alive,
and this was how Cinderella survived.

Await no princes to save you
through their lips touching yours
whilst you are in unwilling slumber.
Meet each other in the womb
of your enchanted dreams,
Snow White and Sleeping Beauty.
Rely on no man to save you,
he will awaken you to a new prison
and take you, for this is the hunger of men.
Darkling magic is coursing through those veins,
turn it into kindling, my resourceful girls,
find one another in the fog realm,
wake each other up instead.

Loving in moderation
and with hidden intentions
is like showing outstretched palms
that hold mere crumbs of your heart,
whilst jealously demanding
someone’s full heart
in return for your crumbs
If you cannot
love someone completely,
it’s better and kinder
not to love them at all,
instead of giving someone else
crumbs that make them feel small.

Not all girls are made of sugar
and spice and all things nice.
These are girls made of dark lace
and witchcraft and a little bit of vice.
These are daughters made claw first
and story-mad, tiger roar and wolf-bad.
These are women made of terrible tempests
and savage storms and the untamed unwanted.
These are damsels made of flawless fearlessness
made of more bravery than knights have ever seen.
These are princesses made of valour and poison alike
and they are here to hold court as your queens.
